Searching the EXPASY Protein database for Protein sequence information

Expasy is a server maintained by the SWISS institute of Bioinformatics. It is the home of Swiss-prot/uniprot, the annotated protein database. It contains a protein database that is extensively cross-referenced with other bioinformatic site that also contains unique information about that specific protein

-

.

Some of the database whose entry can be assessed through the expasy/uniprot entry include:

  • Nucleotide and protein sequence databases
  • Family and domain databases
  • Interaction databases
  • Secondary and tertiary structural database etc

In addition to the protein database hosted on EXPASY,  EXPASY also host different free sequence analytical tools such as Prosite Patterns, Peptide Cutter, Protparam etc

CONDUCTING SIMPLE PROTEIN SEARCH WITH EXPASY.

  1. Point your browser to the expasy swiss prot site at www.expasy.org/sprot/
  2. Type In The Protein Name Or The Expasy’s Accession number (i.e if you have already conducted the search on it before or if you got it from somewhere.) in the search textbox and click GO. Fig 1 .

  • The output is usually very much, you can restrict or filter the results using specified search criteria by clicking on the "fields" button beside the search toolbar of the result page. (mouse over FIG 2 to see a clearer image)

  • Clicking on the fields returns a pull down menu from where one can select a criteria that he/she intends to limit the search to.
  • After selecting desired search criteria, click the add and search button to filter off the result based on the selected criteria
  • Scan through the output result and locate the entry(s) that interests you. Be mindful of the source(organism)
  • Click on the entry of interest from the output result to view the detail expasy report on selected protein.

Consult the site documentation and help for more information on using EXPASY Protein Database.
